The Charleston Artist Guild: Pen and Wash

  • Principle Gallery Charleston 125 Meeting Street Charleston, SC, 29401 United States (map)

The Charleston Artist Guild is pleased to present Pen and Wash, an exhibition featuring a collection of artwork by Hank Pulkowski. Hank is the featured artist at the CAG Gallery for January 2021. The exhibit will run from January 1 through January 31, 2021.

Mostly self-taught as a watercolorist, Hank’s paintings have been juried into and appeared in numerous shows and exhibitions both in Pennsylvania and South Carolina. His work was featured in Professional Artist magazine in their October 2014 issue, and International Artist magazine ran a six-page article on Hank’s work in their February-March 2016 issue.

Hank characterizes his current painting style as mostly representational, existing somewhere between the abstract and the realistic. The up-close detail of a representational painting may appear impressionistic, or even abstract, but when viewed from an appropriate distance, the painting takes on a sense of reality.  The artist states, “Above all, I suppose, representational art is about the suggestion of detail, not the recording of detail.  Being both a photographer and a painter, I am always conscious of the fact that the camera records, while the artist suggests.  As Vincent Van Gogh said: ‘A work of art is a personal encounter with reality, not a copy.’”

To learn more about the artist and see more of his work, please visit his website at www.HankPulkowski.com and also visit the CAG Gallery at 160 East Bay Street. Open 7 days a week, from 11 am to 5 pm.
