Donald Weber recently rediscovered “a collection of photographs from a trip to Italy, about 20 years ago,”; he said, and he was inspired to “revisit” them as painting subjects. As a professional architect as well as a professional artist, he brings discipline and freedom to his canvases, often working, he said, on “up to three at a time.”

Italian Sojourn is a gondola ride slipping beneath bridges, an early morning misty walk through Rome, a trek along the Cinque Terre. Glimpses of daily life are offered: a nun on a narrow street, a drift fisherman, bedding airing in a window

Weber will do an oil painting demonstration in the gallery Saturday, March 7, 2020, 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.  Weber’s contemporary impressionist style has a sense of spontaneity, making it ideal for a demo. He dazzles viewers with his unique perspective and brilliant palette.

He maintains studios in Louisville, Kentucky, and Santa Fe, New Mexico, and he said he finds the contrast in the two locales “energizing”. He and his wife make the roughly 1300-mile trip in an Airstream several times a year.

In 2016, a family trip took him to Charleston. “I was blown away by the galleries here,” he said. He made a second trip soon after to focus on visiting galleries. He said he’d been showing in Santa Fe for six to seven years and was looking for another gallery. He was taken by the city‘s charm and art industry, and Ella was taken with his work. She offered him a show, The Romance of Charleston, which opened in February 2017.

Weber was recently chosen to be the head judge of MasterWorks New Mexico 2020 taking place in March. “This is a great honor for me,” he said, “particularly after seeing the list of past judges.” MasterWorks New Mexico is a juried exhibition and sale showcasing New Mexico’s master fine artists, now in its 22nd year.
