Richard Oversmith ~ Artistic Journey: Charleston, Costa Rica & Iceland
Exhibition Dec. 3 - 30, 2021
Opening reception: Friday, Dec. 3, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Painting demonstration Saturday, Dec. 4, 2:00 - 5:00 p.m.
Whether working in oil or gouache, Oversmith’s confident brushwork, evocative palette, and engaging subject matter have captivated viewers.
Painting for this show has taken him from Iceland to Costa Rica, and to the Lowcountry. “Painting is a solitary experience for me. I like painting with other artist sometimes, but I do my best work alone,” he says.
Oversmith's purpose is to provoke the viewer to interact with his pieces. His paintings are his voice, and stroke by stroke, he composes a whole that relates his vision. Oversmith works in oil on linen, a medium compatible with the passion he puts into his creation. He also works with gouache on watercolor paper. He strives to achieve a mood in every painting through the use of such visual stimuli as color, edges, value and drawing. He has derived his style from the lifelong study of past masters - Edouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard - the influence of contemporary painters he admires such as Joan Mitchell, and elements that have evolved from deep within himself. He allows the setting to speak to him, using a minimum of brushstrokes, and then the scene speaks to the viewer.
Gallery hours Monday - Sunday, 10:00 - 5:00 p.m. Exhibition view through Dec. 30, 2021.
